Welcome to Bernedoodle World! Today, we’re delving into the fascinating genetics behind Bernedoodle furnishings using Punnett squares. This knowledge will help you understand how different coat types are inherited and guide you in choosing the perfect Bernedoodle for your family.

The Basics of Furnishings

Furnishings refer to the adorable facial features like eyebrows, a mustache, and a beard that give Bernedoodles their quintessential "doodle" look. In genetics, these features are represented by the letter 'F'.

Bernese Mountain Dogs typically have no furnishings, represented by 'ff', while Poodles usually have two furnishing genes, represented by 'FF'.

Using Punnett Squares to Predict Coat Types

Crossbreeding Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle

Let's start by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with no furnishings (ff) with a Poodle that has two furnishing genes (FF). We can predict the coat type of their offspring using a Punnett square.

Here’s our Punnett square setup:

- On the top, we place the alleles from the Poodle (F and F).

- On the side, we place the alleles from the Bernese Mountain Dog (f and f).

Each box in the Punnett square represents a possible genetic outcome for a puppy. As you can see, all offspring will have one furnishing gene from the Poodle and one from the Bernese Mountain Dog, resulting in 'Ff'. This means all F1 Bernedoodles from this cross will have furnishings and typically have a lower shedding coat.

Breeding an F1 Bernedoodle with a Poodle to create a F1b Bernedoodle

Now, let’s see what happens when we breed an F1 Bernedoodle (Ff) with a Poodle (FF). Again, we use a Punnett square to predict the outcomes.

Here’s our setup:

- On the top, we place the alleles from the Poodle (F and F).

- On the side, we place the alleles from the F1 Bernedoodle (F and f).

Filling in the squares, we get two boxes with 'FF' and two boxes with 'Ff'. This means:

- 50% of the puppies will have two furnishing genes (FF) and be non-shedding.

- 50% will have one furnishing gene (Ff) and have a lower shedding coat. From this breeding we can tell that all F1b bernedoodles will either carry 1 Furnishing gene or 2 Furnishing genes.

Choosing the Right Bernedoodle for Your Family

Understanding these genetic principles helps you choose a Bernedoodle with the coat type that best suits your family's needs. Whether you prefer minimal shedding or that classic doodle look, knowing the genetic makeup is key.

Most importantly, look for breeders who perform genetic testing. This testing ensures you know the exact coat type you can expect from your Bernedoodle, making your decision more informed and reliable.
